GPAG PRESENTS: BREATHLESS and ROCK REJECT
Toronto filmmaker Kathleen Mullen and Halifax author Jim Williams come together at the Gibsons Public Art Gallery on Sunday, June 23rd for an evening of film and book reading. Both artists weave together personal stories with historical and present-day accounts of the dangers of asbestos.
In Breathless, Mullen takes on the asbestos industry through a moving and personal investigation into her father’s death from an asbestos-related disease and the current use of asbestos in Canada and internationally. Banned in many countries due to its carcinogenic properties, asbestos is still mined and exported by Canada, along with Russia and several other countries.
Author Jim Williams worked in the Cassier asbestos mine in the early ‘70s; this experience forms the background and setting for his award-winning novel, Rock Reject. Williams’ characters lead us through the corridors of union politics and management’s denial of health risks to workers and residents of the nearby native community.
GPAG is located in the old Bank of Montreal building in Gibsons Landing. Admission by donation, start time is 7:00.
