During National Indigenous History Month, Octopus Books invites you to an event which will examine the past and present of colonialism in Canada. Historian Joseph Graham will be joined in conversation by Veldon Coburn, assistant professor in the Institute of Canadian and Aboriginal Studies at the University of Ottawa, to discuss their fascinating and insightful new books.

In Insatiable Hunger: Colonial Encounters In Context, Joseph Graham traces events from Jacques Cartier’s first visits to North America in the 16th century to the war of 1812, delving back to compare and contrast European historical accounts with Indigenous stories of Contact to illustrate the wide cultural chasm that separated the two civilizations. The causes and scale of the mutual incomprehension–and its unbalanced consequences–experienced by both settlers and Indigenous peoples is the subject of Graham’s historical exposition.

Veldon Coburn, Anishinaabe and a member of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn. is co-editor of Capitalism and Dispossession: Corporate Canada at Home and Abroad. This collection brings together a range of case studies which highlight the role of Canadian corporations and the state in producing and exacerbating conditions of dispossession both at home and abroad. Rather than instances of exceptional greed or malice, these cases are shown to be expected and inherent consequences of capitalism and modern-day settler colonialism.

Books will be available to purchase and a signing will follow the discussion.

The Atelier is wheelchair-accessible and an amplifier system will be used to assist the hard of hearing.

Co-sponsored by Octopus Books.
