Author, Professor and Activist Leaves Behind Important, Passionate Legacy

We are truly sorry to announce that Elizabeth Elliott, author of Security, With Care and professor at Simon Fraser, has passed away. Needless to say, she will be truly missed by many.

Please read the statement from SFU below:

It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that our colleague, Liz Elliott, died this morning; at home, peacefully, and in the company of her loving family.

This is a great loss for the School of Criminology at SFU, for the restorative justice movement, and to the cause of social justice and correctional reform in Canada.  She will be sorely missed.  A warrior has fallen; it behooves the rest of us who share her commitment to pick up the banner and continue her work with greater resolve.

Her office will also be open each working day next week (Sept. 19-23) from 9.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. for those who wish to visit what is still very much Liz’s space. Our collective condolences will be passed to her family.

As you may know, residents at the Ferndale Correctional Centre have carved a totem pole as a gesture of thanks for all the work she has done with and for inmates, especially throughout the Pacific Region, and for her enduring commitment to the cause of restorative justice and restorative practices. The plan was to raise the pole in mid October on the concourse in front of the General Office and to combine the ceremony with a Ting Forum on Aboriginal Justice.  That plan remains unchanged.  In addition, the display case that is immediately opposite the site for the totem pole will be cleared and dedicated to Liz, and to her work, at the earliest opportunity.

Please stay tuned for more information regarding memorial services and celebrations of Liz’s life.
