TRASIEGO AT HISTORIC JOY KOGAWA HOUSE
Trasiego at Historic Joy Kogawa House will interweave Dafne Blanco and Carmen Rodríguez’s work and stories with those of Japanese Canadian writer Joy Kogawa.
In 1941, when war was declared against Japan, the Government of Canada required all Japanese nationals and those naturalized after 1922 to register as enemy aliens. In 1942, they were ordered to turn over property and belongings and 22,0000 Japanese Canadians were relocated to detention camps in the interior of British Columbia.
Kogawa was only six years old when she and her family were uprooted from their Vancouver home. Now, Historic Joy Kogawa House stands as a reminder of the injustices suffered by her community, a symbol of resistance and a space of dialogue and creativity for Canadian writers and artists.
Join us for the opening of Trasiego at Historic Joy Kogawa House:
When: Tuesday, November 8, 7:00pm Where: 1450 West 64th Ave., just east of Granville Street
Carmen Rodríguez, current writer-in-residence at Kogawa House, will be in attendance, while Dafne Blanco will join the gathering on Zoom.
In addition to viewing the installation itself and engaging in conversation with Carmen and Dafne, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to a short poetry reading by Carmen Rodríguez.
