Add to calendar

Dr. El Jones is an Assistant Professor of Political and Canadian Studies at Mount Saint Vincent University, prison justice and abolition activist, former Halifax poet laureate, and author of the new book Abolitionist Intimacies (Fernwood, 2022). On November 4, she will be giving a free public talk in downtown Ottawa, which is situated on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe Territory. During the event, El will share passages from her latest book about imprisonment and abolitionist struggles for liberation, including poetry. She will be joined by special guests who will also share their insights about the Canadian carceral state and the need for decarceral futures.

This free event will also raise awareness about, and funds for, a legal challenge to stop a new provincial prison from being built on the grounds of the Kemptville Agricultural College, which is located roughly an hour from Ottawa where the Government of Ontario has acknowledged most people imprisoned there will be from. 40% of proceeds from the sale of the book and CPEP merchandise, as well as a raffle that evening will go towards this legal fight. Join us.

If you cannot make the event, you can make a donation to the legal challenge. Go to: www.coalitionagainstproposedprison.ca _Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/5647090065312337
