Join author Jon Careless in conversation with Ryan Kelpin at A Different Booklist about Caught In the Eye of the Storm Urban Revitalization in Toronto’s Lawrence Heights.

Caught in the Eye of the Storm is an account of a community struggling to preserves itself in the face of stigmatization, oppression and urban revitalization. It evaluates tenant involvement in the process of revitalization and shows that is not a purely hopeless endeavor. Through their collective agency the tenants of Lawrence Heights are breaking new ground.

This historically significant case study and has relevant lessons for anyone involved in housing justice.

About the author: 

Jon Careless is a researcher of urban issues, including homelessness and urban revitalization, with a primary focus on the city of Toronto, where he lives. He has a PhD in political science from York University and works as a senior policy advisor for Ontario Public Service. 

About the moderator: 
 
Ryan Kelpin has a PhD in Political Science from York University. His dissertation focused on the relationship between Ontario and Toronto from 1996-2023 and how the province routinely utilized its constitutional powers to restructure Toronto's democratic decision-making institutions and processes in the name of neoliberalism. In addition to teaching in the Politics and Social Sciences departments at York University, Ryan contributes to Canadian Dimension and The Grind and has published in the Canadian Journal of Urban Research, Alternate Routes, and the Journal of Australian Political Economy. He has a co-authored chapter with Carlo Fanelli in the upcoming Fernwood Publishing edited volume Against The People: How Ford Nation is Dismantling Ontario.
