Making a Home

Assisted Living in the Community for Young Disabled People

by Jen Powley

Making a Home: Assisted Living in the Community for Young Disabled People, the newest book from author and disability advocate Jen Powley, describes the author’s exhausting yet tireless efforts to establish a program that
allows adults with severe disabilities the choice to live in community as opposed to in an institution.

In her book, Powley discusses the realities of being a non-senior disabled adult who requires assisted care on a regular basis. She introduces the reader not only to the historical contexts of modern assisted living infrastructure, but also gives us an insider’s experience into the obstacles adherent to establishing a care program for disabled adults.

With clear language, in-depth research, and a warm authorial voice, Powley offers an engaging introduction to the in/accessibility of assisted living for disabled adults in Nova Scotia and broadly throughout Canada. A detailed, comprehensible read, Making a Home invites those familiar with disability, ableism, and care work, as well as those newer to the topic, to further their understanding of the lived experiences of disabled Canadians.
