Permanent Part-time Position
Location: Halifax
Fernwood is an independent Canadian publisher with radically left political views. For over thirty years we have sought social transformation through publishing books of non-fiction and fiction for general public, academic and scholarly readers. We publish books that acknowledge, confront, and contest all forms of oppression and exploitation. We believe that in publishing books that challenge the status quo and imagine new ways forward we participate in the struggle for a just, equitable society.
The ideal person for this position will have strong organizational and time management skills with an ability to prioritize work. They will be proficient with QuickBooks Online, Microsoft Office, and demonstrate a willingness to learn other applications as necessary. They will have an interest in social justice publishing, effective communication skills, and the ability to work independently and in a collaborative work environment as part of the Fernwood team. This job involves lifting and moving boxes of books.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- liaise with bookkeeper regarding financial management such as accounts payable and accounts receivable;
- undertake in-office finance related activities, including making payments, bank deposits, invoice creation, invoice follow up, and employee expense reports;
- participate in finance committee to develop, review and analyze budget, cashflow and quarterly reports
- manage author royalties including maintaining database and processing annual royalties calculations and payments;
- send copies for review, author, and complimentary books and maintain relevant documentation;
- manage office administration, including phone, email accounts, office equipment, office supplies, filing and mail;
- manage office inventory;
- coordinate online and office orders and provide customer service;
- create ISBN records;
- submit applications to Library and Archives Canada for CIP data.
This is a permanent part-time position (3 days per week). The salary is $34,392 and includes health benefits, paid vacation and sick time. The start date is October 21, 2024 or as soon as possible. This is an in-office position located in Halifax. We encourage and actively seek applications from structurally disadvantaged communities.
