The Washington Post just posted a great, informative op-ed by Stephen Kimber, which lays out some of the basic information surrounding the case and points to evidence found by Kimber that illustrates the innocence of the Cuban Five, four of whom are still in US prisons. The five agents were gathering intelligence to stop terrorist attacks against Cuba, including a 1998 plot to blow up an airplane filled with tourists bound for Cuba. In fact, a deadly plane bombing in 1976 in Cuba was the worst act of air terrorism in the Americas until 9/11.
Despite meetings and cooperation with the US Government, the Five were arrested in September 1998. As Kimber writes, the case of the Cuban Five is “a contradiction Americans should consider.” As should we all.
