Fernwood is an independent Canadian publisher with radically left political views. We seek social transformation through publishing books of non-fiction and fiction for general public, academic and scholarly readers. We publish books that acknowledge, confront and contest all forms of oppression and exploitation. The production and design coordinator is responsible for coordinating the print and digital book production process, designing book interiors and some covers as well as developing accessible eBooks. It also involves designing and coordinating the production of marketing and promotional materials. This position is highly collaborative and also involves some grant writing and reporting responsibilities.

The ideal person for this position will have demonstrated design skills, strong proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office applications, accessible eBook development skills, impeccable workflow management skills, commitment to justice-seeking activity, strong communication skills as well as the ability to work independently and in a collaborative work environment as part of the Fernwood team. This position requires extensive time working on a computer and an ability to work within tight timelines. A detailed job description is available below.

Coordinate book production process

  • Liaise with development editors, authors, copyeditors, translators, designers, proofreaders, indexers, co-publishers, printers, marketing and promotions folks

  • Coordinate the full book production process from final manuscript to shipment of books from the printer, developing timelines and meeting necessary deadlines

  • typesetting

  • text/interiors design

  • cover design

  • image creation and editing

  • preparation of ARCs (digital and print as requested)

  • proofreading

  • entering corrections

  • indexing

  • author reviews and approvals of interiors and covers

  • prepare files for print

  • review and approve proofs

  • printing (request estimates, secure print times)

  • shipping arrangements from printer

  • maintain archives of electronic files for all books

Book Design and Layout

  • Design and related aspects of interior layout

  • typesetting (Word, InDesign)

  • text/interiors design and layout (InDesign, Acrobat)

  • image (figures, photos, illustrations) creation and editing (Word, Excel, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat)

  • Design and related aspects of cover layout

  • develop some cover designs (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat)

Coordinate Cover Design

  • Undertake coordination of cover design – initial front covers for marketing and full covers for print, meeting all deadlines

  • collaborate with marketing, promotion, development editors and authors to develop design briefs for freelance cover designers

  • assign cover design projects to freelancers

  • coordinate cover development process

Create marketing and promotion materials

  • Receive requests for marketing and promotion materials and develop accordingly

  • ads

  • seasonal catalogues

  • subject area catalogues

  • Tip sheets

  • flyers

  • event posters

  • other materials as needed

Co-ordinate reprints and printing of POD orders

  • receive orders, arrange printing and shipping of POD books

  • receive requests for reprints from marketing, sales and distribution manager

  • request reprint estimates from printers and place orders

  • ensure corrections flagged from earlier print runs are corrected in subsequent print runs

  • prepare electronic files and provide to printers

  • manage timelines

  • arrange shipping

  • maintain records related to POD orders and reprints

Create and provide digital files for books and covers as requested

  • accessibility services requests

  • ARCs for marketing and promotions

  • review copies for marketing and promotions

  • exam copies for marketing

  • create and provide digital files as requested from a variety of sources as needed

Develop electronic books

  • create accessible ePub and web-PDF files of all new titles and backlist as required

  • keep updated on accessibility standards and develop best practices for accessible eBooks

Coordinate production of audiobooks

  • coordinate audiobook production as needed

This is a full-time position. The salary is $55,300 and includes health benefits. The start date is June 5, 2023. Ideally this position will be located in our Winnipeg or Halifax office, but a remote position will be considered.
