Fernwood Publishing has offices in Manitoba and Nova Scotia and is seeking a full-time publishing assistant to manage publishing administration tasks in our Winnipeg office as well as assist with book production. The person in this position will work virtually with the finance and administrative manager, managing editor (both located in the Nova Scotia office), and other members of the team—sharing tasks as workload dictates.
Fernwood is undergoing some reorganization and has recently hired a number of new people to replace some long-term staff who have moved on. We are looking for an innovative, energetic colleague who is excited to be part of the ongoing reshaping of the organization.
Manage the Winnipeg office:
manage accounts receivable and accounts payable for the Manitoba office
provide financial info to finance manager
process office sales and issue invoices, make bank deposits, complete monthly office reports (office sales, credit card allocations, petty cash, and deposit reports)
manage permissions requests
provide customer service for online eBook and print book orders
prepare and submit applications for Cataloguing in Publication (CIP) data
make deposits to Library Archives Canada and Manitoba Legislative Library
create and provide files as requested by university accessibility services
send out author copies, communicate with authors, and maintain relevant records
send out book copies to freelancers as required
phone, mail, email
office maintenance, supplies, and equipment
stock transfers and inventory
Assist with book production:
prepare design briefs and coordinate cover design
image assessment and editing
enter corrections resulting from proofreading
coordinate printing and shipping of print on demand (POD) orders and reprints
create and provide exam copies
Support marketing and promotion efforts as requested:
create marketing and promotional materials such as ads, flyers, catalogues
attend conferences, manage book tables, and attend book events
send manuscripts or book copies to reviewers, endorsers, etc. as required
assist with examination copy requests as needed
You will need:
passion about the role of publishing in a politics of justice
excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and an ability to prioritize competing tasks to meet demanding deadlines
experience and understanding of administrative management and customer service
proficiency with Excel, Word, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat, and a willingness to learn other applications, such as FileMaker Pro
self-motivation to manage your own work
an ability to work collaboratively
Application deadline is February 12, 2021. The position is full-time and located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The salary is $47,000 and includes a staff benefits package. Starting date is April 1, 2021 or earlier if possible.
