Employment Opportunity: Marketing, Sales, and Distribution Manager

Fernwood is an independent Canadian publisher with radically left political views. We seek social transformation through publishing books of non-fiction and fiction for general public, academic, and scholarly readers. We publish books that acknowledge, confront, and contest all forms of oppression and exploitation. Fernwood is hiring for three positions to replace some long-term staff who are moving on. While our small team is sad to see them go, we think of this as an opportunity to meet the folks who will help take Fernwood into its next phase. We are looking for innovative, energetic colleagues who are excited to influence what we do next. This posting is for one of the three positions we will be hiring for this year: a Marketing, Sales, and Distribution Manager.

Fernwood Publishing is seeking a full-time Marketing, Sales, and Distribution Manager to oversee the marketing, sale, and distribution of all Fernwood titles; to develop and manage all book metadata; to track, analyze, and report on our sales throughout the year; to market our extensive backlist and forthcoming releases; to work with the Promotions and Publicity Manager on marketing plans; and to contribute to the general work of the publishing company. Experience with ONIX and other metadata systems is necessary.

You are:

You will:

  • design and execute comprehensive marketing and sales strategies for all new and backlist Fernwood titles and the company in general;

  • create and maintain relationships with authors throughout cycle of their books;

  • track and analyze sales;

  • produce regular sales reports;

  • prepare and distribute bibliodata;

  • monitor supply chains to ensure accurate and updated information;

  • manage website (loading new title records, copy, covers, endorsements and other details as needed);

  • liaise with distributors and sales reps (Canada/US/UK);

  • work with other Fernwood staff to present books at sales conferences;

  • manage stock and inventory levels with all distributors;

  • oversee and coordinate office sales, including author orders, website orders, bulk orders and special sales;

  • determine need and quantities for print runs and reprints;

  • manage eBook and audiobook distribution;

  • collaborate on creation of marketing and promotional materials including catalogues;

  • collaborate with the Promotions and Publicity Manager on regular marketing activities and initiatives, including targeted promotions, mailings, and advertising, building external partnerships, managing marketing budgets, assisting with grant-writing and project plans, and other tasks;

  • participate in regular staff meetings, editorial meetings and other meetings as required;

  • with other staff, plan and participate in book launches, sales conferences, academic conferences, trade shows, professional development sessions, and publishing industry events;

  • with other staff, finalize titles/subtitles, determine target market, cover concept and copy, advertising copy;

  • provide advance marketing evaluations on projects being considered for publication;

  • assist with preparing rights sales sheets for international book fairs.

You will need:

  • ingenuity and enthusiasm for selling books that promote social justice and challenge mainstream culture and politics;

  • excellent organization and planning skills, attention to detail, and an ability to prioritize competing tasks to meet demanding deadlines;

  • strong critical thinking and analytical skills;

  • excellent and accurate communication skills;

  • an ability to work collaboratively;

  • a post-secondary degree or relevant work experience;

  • proficiency with Microsoft Office, FileMakerPro and social media platforms;

  • knowledge of ONIX, basic HTML;

  • experience with Adobe Creative Suite.

Application deadline is July 3, 2020. The position is full time and located in Black Point, NS. The salary is $44,000 and includes a staff benefits package. Starting date is as soon as possible.
