Jan Douwe van der Ploeg is a professor of rural sociology at Wageningen University in the Netherlands and at China Agricultural University in Beijing. He is chief editor of the English language collection European Perspectives on Rural Development, published by Van Gorcum in Assen, the Netherlands.
