Fernwood’s Publishing Program
We are looking for books that present a critical analysis of our society—analyses that approach environmental degradation, poverty, child welfare, and other social problems brought about by the capitalist, profit-oriented market economy, as rooted in the inequalities of class, gender, race, sexual orientation. Our books challenge many existing norms and consider alternatives.
While many of our books are used by academics and are widely adopted as course texts in colleges and universities, we also seek to publish books that will reach a wider audience. Our books are of use to politically and socially engaged activists and to general readers who are interested and concerned about the issues addressed in our books.
We publish in a variety of non-fiction areas, including women’s studies, native studies, politics and political economy (Canadian and international), sociology, criminology, cultural studies, and social work (for a more detailed listing see the book categories listed on our home page). While these are our primary topic areas, we are interested in any manuscript that provides a critical analysis of our society.
If you have a book idea or a completed manuscript that meets these guidelines, send us a proposal and we will consider it for publication.
Book Proposals
A book proposal need not be more than 4 to 5 pages in length. It must contain a tentative table of contents and enough information for us to assess its content and its potential audience. To do that we ask that you follow these guidelines:
Overall Argument and Theoretical Framework
Explain to us the subject matter of your proposed book and outline its overall argument, providing enough detail so that your line of argument is clear. The theoretical framework of the proposed manuscript must be explained in sufficient detail to give us, and our reviewers, an understanding of how it is related to the subject matter.
Outline
The outline must include a provisional title for the book, a tentative table of contents, and a brief description of each chapter. If you plan to include tables, charts, figures, or photos, please indicate their content and how many you plan to include.
About Yourself (Yourselves)
Include some information about yourself (and your co-authors, if applicable). We require you to submit a current CV that includes a listing of what you have published and any other experience that qualifies you to write this book.
Audience & Use
The proposal must include an indication of the audience you intend to reach with your book. This should include a clear indication of the level of audience (such as college, university undergraduate, university graduate, general public) the proposed manuscript is intended for. An evaluation of how your proposed work compares with existing published material would be very helpful.
Length & Completion Date
Indicate the expected length of your book (estimate this in both the number of 8 1/2 x 11, double-spaced, 12-point font pages, and the number of words), as well as a realistic schedule and completion date.
The Basics
The Basics is a long-standing and successful series. Books in this series are concise, topical, and largely empirical. They are primarily, but not exclusively, used as supplementary texts in undergraduate courses. If your proposal is for The Basics, then your manuscript must not exceed 55,000 words (in most cases, not more than 160 double spaced 8 1/2 x 11 manuscript pages). Manuscripts can be shorter but the format of The Basics will not allow them to be longer.
What To Submit
All proposals must be typed and double-spaced with a 1-inch left and a 1 1/4 inch right hand margin. If you choose to send a hard copy of your proposal, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope along with three copies of your proposal as, in many cases, we send proposals to two reviewers for comments. Please note that we cannot return any submitted materials. We will also accept electronic submissions.
Completed Manuscripts
We do sometimes accept completed manuscripts for consideration, however only if they are previously arranged. If you have a completed manuscript, you must first contact us by mail, phone, or email before sending it to us.
How To Submit
Submit your proposal electronically to: editorial@fernpub.ca
Please be aware that we receive many book proposals and manuscripts. The review and assessment process is complex and time-consuming. Be patient, we will get to your proposal or manuscript as quick as we can, but be prepared to wait up to 12 weeks for our response.
Thank you for your interest in our publishing program and for thinking of Fernwood Publishing as the publisher for your book.
